Another New Driver

Well, it's done. Child # 5 has his learner's permit. In this state he must take a driver education/training course, and it is NOT offered through the schools. I am frustrated. I taugh 4 older kids, plus a couple of their friends. None had any difficulty passing their driver's tests. Granted, more than one speed demon was released after full liscensing, but that is not totally my fault! I do look forward to R driving--I've kept my VA lisence even tho I am not allowed to drive. This way I can legally ride with him. He will receive his liscence approx one week before my liscence expires. I cannot qualify for an Oh liscence--so I'll be going the ID card route after that. Ironically--he doesn't want to drive, but I need him to, and so, like yours truely, he has no choice but to drive. We will be able to go collect E from school in Boston in early May (and all her stuff.--Yes, we will be crowded...) We will be able to explore Ohio this summer. And the genealogy trips--to NY, to MI and IN and possibly even within OH. Little does he know... he's just thinking about driving to school next year and not riding the bus. Ha!

I can't believe that R is old enough to have his permit already. Crazy. The poor kid, you have his life planned out for him (at least so far as driving is concerned), and you know at his age he does NOT want to be seen with his MOM.

Oh, and I'm getting much better about the speeding thing. It's been over 2 years since my last ticket!

I'm glad about your lack of speeding--can you cure the two siblings on either side of you? And I am not referring to 'Chuck'.

And as far as being seen with Mom--tough cookies--you all had to go through it--and I get more embarrassing with each kid--it's an art form, I say:)

I DOUBT you get more embarrassing with each kid. You were pretty bad with me. Still are. Love you anyway.

I have NEVER had a ticket. Just want to let everyone know that. HA HA HA HA! I'm a good driver, so there. I got a citation once for not having insurance, but that's totally different.

Just because you've never gotten a ticket (and you have-citations are the same thing) doesn't make you a great driver. Now personally I think you're fine. I have a friend here that's never been pulled over...but she's totaled 4 cars. In four years of driving. I rode with her once. I won't do it again.

Anyways, I'm a good driver too. And the speeding tickets I got were stupid, they were for going 63 in a 55 and 80 in a 65. The 80 in a 65 was because I was in the middle of nowhere, PA, in the middle of the night, and a car was tailing me. So I sped up. THEN he chose to turn on his flashers.

And mom, richard is *not* going to be ready to drive to Boston in May. He won't have been driving long enough. And I'll have to actually drive in the city, he definitely can't do that. But that's a mute point. You can't expect a kid like him to make a 12 hour or more drive up here.

Erica, I drove from Arkansas to Wyoming on my driver's permit. Long-distance driving is actually a really good way to do some of your first driving. I'll agree that Boston is NOT the city for him to drive in right now (they are even worse than Salt Lake drivers!! Scary!!), but he can make a 12 hour trip, no problem. Have some confidence in him.

And a citation and a ticket are totally different. For one thing, the citation never went on my record and never affected anything on my insurance (when I did get it), whereas a ticket affects everything.

Speeding is speeding, and it's breaking the law. Doesn't matter if you think it's stupid, it's still breaking the law, so expect to get caught sometimes.

Thanks for saying I'm a good driver, btw. I think I am! :)

ps when are you going to write on your blog again?? Hmmmm??

pps it's not a mute point, it's a moot point. Sorry, but I had to make that distinction. Normally I wouldn't care, but that's one of those words that when someone messes it up it just makes them look really ignorant (which you are NOT), and it also just really gets on my nerves like you wouldn't believe. Sorry.

S & E: (& L, too...)Gosh, S, if I'm not getting more embarrassing, I'm falling down on the job, and will have to try harder--new opportunity in Boston next week, heh, heh, heh:D

Anyway. I agree on the 12 hr drive with S.
I agree on the city driving with E! I was actually hoping we could get a native to do that part. I have made contact with a Briggs (Harrington connection) cousin in the area, and may try to make some arrangement thru him if your friends aren't availible. A trustworthy friend behind the wheel--NOT the one you mentioned.

Oh, and S is an excellent driver. So is E, altho she does have a little lead in her foot (genetic defect, I'm sure) and E's tickets were bad ones. But...as Uncle T says, don't complain. Just take it in place of all the ones you deserved, but didn't get. He should know:D

I agree with the long distance driving being good. I drove from Deming to San Diego and back on my permit, and it gave me much more confidence, and I was much more comfortable behind the wheel. I still don't like to drive though.

I think, despite the fact that I got a couple speeding tickets, I'm a good driver. I've never sped when it was unsafe to do so, and I never went faster than I knew I had control. I'm also considerate as a driver, and try to be aware of the others driving around me.

Sorry to leave you out--L is an excellent driver, too.:D

Yeah, I drove long distances on my permit, too. But not when I'd only had it a month and a half! I didn't even drive on the freeway till I'd been driving for a couple of months. And I *wanted* to drive! Richard doesn't want to, and that why I'm afraid he's not gonna be ready.

I can drive in Boston, I've done it before and I can handle it. Good thing I don't live downtown, though!

And I knew about the moot/mute thing. I just wasn't thinking.
